Gurudev's memorial service in the city this morning (for those who couldn't make the trip to Virginia) was simple and perfect. We chanted the Maha Mritunjaya Mantra, for about an hour, sending him off on a wave of groovy, celestial sound...Then there was about ten minutes of silent meditation/prayer.

It was light, unsentimental...again, all I could feel was a great sense of freedom and peace.

From the sublime to the sublime: 24 Hour Party People is one of the best rock movies I've seen, and people, I've seen them all. It is just the right mix of historical accuracy, energetic performances (especially Steve Coogan as sorta-impresario Tony Wilson) and great live footage (some of it real, some fake). A really delicious insularity, too, as if nothing else in the world mattered in Manchester in the 80s except its own bands. But here's the truly special thing about 24PP: it captures the energy and vitality of the scene, the blood and guts passion behind the music, without taking itself too seriously. Got that, future rock filmmakers?
